Jan Rychlewski, “CEIIINOSSSTTUV”. Mathematical structure of elastic bodies
“The insightful essay of Professor Jan Rychlewski presented below was devised during his stay as a visiting professor at the Institute of Mechanical Problems in Moscow in 1983. It is devoted to the spectral analysis of symmetric fourth-order tensors – stiffness C and compliance S, describing the properties of linear elastic anisotropic materials. The presented general analysis has been divided into individual classes of material anisotropies, such as: full (triclinic) anisotropy, monoclinic, orthotropic, tetragonal, trigonal, cubic anisotropy, as well as transversal and full isotropy. […] J. Rychlewski’s monograph is a ground-breaking work. The subsequent known works on the same issue, i.e. the determination of the true elastic moduli and the corresponding eigentensors by M.M. Mehrabadi, S.C. Cowin […], and also by S. Sutcliffe […] were published much later, i.e. in 1990 and 1992, respectively. “ From the Preface by Prof. Zenon Mróz Chairman of the Editorial Committee Applied Mechanics Series The essay was translated from Russian and provided with extended commentary by Andrzej Ziółkowski, PhD, DSc. The book is available in two language versions – Polish and English.

(in Polish: Fenomenologiczna mechanika ośrodków ciągłych)
|
The scientific monograph "The Phenomenological Mechanics of Continuous Media" combines theoretical mechanics, physics and mathematics. The book includes sufficient information to describe the macroscopic motions of deformable bodies.
This monograph displays an innovative approach to describing and modelling anisotropic materials. It also includes many new conclusions from the Author's own works and her co-authors concerning the description of the elastic and plastic properties of anisotropic materials. The scientific findings concerning the structure of anisotropic materials have allowed to design modern, optimized structures by appropriately modifying technological processes, this allows to obtain the established mechanical properties of the final product.
The Author's extensive didactic experience has also contributed to the work, as she taught the subject for several decades at doctoral studies at the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences and other Polish universities.
Czesław Bajer, Bartłomiej Dyniewicz, Dominik Pisarski, Jacek M. Bajkowski, Vibration Control with Smart Materials
|
Elimination of vibration is the important task in the period of rapid technological development. Although theoretical basis was created many years ago, practical solutions are not sufficiently implemented. The vibration theory and the control theory are the base of our further considerations. The book is addressed to PhD students, researchers, as well as engineers. It covers the fields of control of structures in civil engineering and machinery engineering. We hope that in the book the reader will find the theoretical background of structural vibrations, optimal semi-active control strategies and examples of numerical simulations of real engineering structures. Nonclassical materials will deliver data that could be used in further research. The work was supported by the National Centre for Research and Development, Lider/26/40/L-2/10/NCBiR/2011.
Janina Ostrowska-Maciejewska, Katarzyna Kowalczyk-Gajewska, Tensor Calculus in Continuous Media Mechanics
(in Polish: Rachunek Tensorowy w Mechanice Ośrodków Ciągłych)
|
The mechanics of continuous media, in connection with the development of modern technology and the emergence of new materials, is a field that is constantly evolving both in terms of the level of generalization of the conceptual apparatus and the application of various modern branches of mathematics, in particular advanced tools of tensor calculus. The material presented in the book allows students to study freely monographs and scientific works in this field. It is assumed that the reader has a basic understanding of linear algebra, mathematical analysis, analytical geometry, and differential geometry. Nevertheless, the issues belonging to these branches of mathematics, important from the point of view of tensor calculus, have also been presented, in order to constitute the material as a whole. It was limited to Euclidean tensors. More attention has been paid to space and planar tensors of the second, third and fourth order due to their important role in continuum mechanics. Isotropic and spectral distributions connected with those tensors for which such distributions exist are discussed. Due to the growing number of modern materials with anisotropic properties, much space has been devoted to the groups of tensor symmetries and tensor functions describing such materials. An important part of the book are the numerous tasks and solutions at the end of each chapter. They illustrate the use of tensor calculus to solve specific problems in mechanics.
The monograph is the result of both lectures and exercises on the subject fundamentals and applications of tensor calculus in the mechanics of continuous media, conducted by the Authors for many years at the IPPT PAN PhD Study, as well as their own scientific research on the description of elastic and plastic properties of anisotropic materials.
Michał Kleiber, Piotr Kowalczyk, Introduction to nonlinear thermomechanics of deformable bodies
(in Polish: Wprowadzenie do nieliniowej termomechaniki ciał odkształcalnych)
|
Conscious application of widely used CAD / CAM programs in the context of computational applications of structural mechanics and technological processes requires basic knowledge of nonlinear thermomechanics of deformable bodies. The textbook covers an introduction to this field of science in a continual way. It presents the basic concepts of the subject, the mathematical formulation of the equations of the problem, as well as the basics of approximate discrete formulations, which are the foundation of numerical methods for solving systems of differential equations. Despite the fact that the modern thermomechanics of deformable bodies, even in its first linear approximation, is a huge field and often deterring with its complicated mathematical apparatus, the authors tried to present the material in a manner accessible also to people who only know the basics of analytical mechanics and have no experience in the field of continuum mechanics. The argument is preceded by an introduction to the concepts of tensor calculus. The material is richly illustrated with exercises.
The text of the book was written during a one-semester lecture on the subject of the same title, conducted at the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Sciences of the Warsaw University of Technology for IT students and doctoral students of various specialties.
Czesław Bajer, The method of space-time elements in the computation of the dynamics of structures
(in Polish: Metoda elementów czasoprzestrzennych w obliczeniach dynamiki konstrukcji)
|
The book describes computer methods of structural vibration analysis. A significant part of it is devoted to the method of space-time elements in the displacement and velocity description. The content is supplemented by a description and evaluation of selected known and less known methods of integrating the structure dynamics digitized in the space of differential equations and meshless methods.
The book may be of interest to students and PhD students, structural engineers and researchers of selected dynamics.
Leszek Jarecki, Kinetic theory of nucleation in systems of orientable molecules
(in Polish: Kinetyczna teoria nukleacji w układach cząsteczek orientowalnych)
|
The monograph presents a kinetic theory of crystal nucleation in the systems of orientable particles basing on the original studies of the subject led in the last years in the Laboratory of Polymer Physics of the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research, Polish Academy of Sciences, which provide comprehensive formulation of the topic. The matter presented in the monograph answers the needs of formulation of a kinetic theory of nucleation under the external orienting fields. In particular, it may concern formation of oriented crystalline structure in polymers subjected to mechanical, hydrodynamic, electric or magnetic fields, where crystallization takes place under the conditions of molecular orientation. Fundamentals of the classical theory are not sufficient for such applications because they do not consider the effects of molecular asymmetry and orientation of the kinetic elements involved in the process. The examples may concern classical and aerodynamic melt spinning of fibres, electro-spinning of nano-fibres form crystallizing polymer melts where the nucleation and crystallization rate increase by orders of magnitude due to enhanced molecular orientation, and highly oriented polycrystalline structure is formed. The role of molecular asymmetry and orientation in the kinetics of crystal nucleation and texture formation in polymers during technological processes is a consequence of long orientation relaxation times being of the order of magnitude of the processing time.
A fundamental model element of the presented theory is a tolerance angle which defines a range of mutual orientations of the asymmetric kinetic elements allowing for association at thermal collisions. Introduction of molecular asymmetry, the tolerance angle, and orientability of the kinetic elements in the external fields opens several new problems in the kinetic theory of nucleation processes. The main mechanisms controlling nucleation kinetics in the systems of asymmetric elements, as well as the fundamentals of the process are presented and discussed considering the mechanism of thermal fluctuations. The proposed theory could find applications in the analysis of the development of oriented polycrystalline structure in systems under the external orienting fields.
In comparison to the classical approach, the configurational space in the presented nucleation theory in systems of asymmetric particles considers also the angular space of orientations of the kinetic elements, as well as the effects of finite rotational diffusion rate and limited tolerance angle in the kinetics of the association process. Thermodynamic potentials, association and dissociation rate constants modified by the effects of finite rotational diffusion, steady-state nucleation fluxes, as well as the thermodynamic and kinetic characteristics of the process in the external orienting fields, including also the effects of unsteady molecular orientation, are discussed. Example applications of the theory for the kinetics of crystal nucleation in polymers subjected to electric field or remaining under time-variable molecular orientation are presented.
Zbigniew L. Kowalewski, The phenomenon of creep of metals. Experiment and modeling
(in Polish: Zjawisko pełzania metali. Eksperyment i modelowanie)
|
The book presents issues related to the creep phenomenon, which develops mainly where there are long-term loads of the structure at elevated temperatures. Creep test techniques are discussed. Much space has been devoted to the characteristics of deformation mechanisms controlling the course of creep deformation and the mechanisms responsible for damage and destruction of typical construction materials as a result of its operation. The advantage of the book is a very rich set of practical examples of creep research conducted in domestic and foreign research centers on various categories of creep analysis. Particularly noteworthy is the discussion of a new trend in experimental creep tests, combining classic macroscopic creep tests with non-destructive and metallographic tests, in which one seeks mutual correlation of parameters obtained by destructive and non-destructive methods, characterizing the degree of degradation of metals and their alloys.
The proposed position is addressed both to engineers and technicians involved in the operation of devices and structural elements under long-term conditions of complex loads working at elevated temperature, as well as to research and teaching staff, whose area of interest is related to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of the creep process and modeling the course of the phenomenon. The book contains very valuable teaching material that can be used in lectures on the mechanics of solids.
The issues presented in the book are of great cognitive importance, especially utilitarian, because they are related to the safety of devices used in the energy, aviation, chemical and defense industries. Since the study identifies factors that have a direct impact on determining the necessary reserve period of safe operation of the supervised devices, its reading will contribute to a better preparation of engineers and technicians related to the operation of devices operating in the above-mentioned industries.

Michał Kleiber, Wise Poland
(in Polish: Mądra Polska)
|
The book is a systematic collection of selected publications by the author from 2010–2015. The common denominator of all texts is the role of knowledge in the socio-economic development of Poland. The issue of our country catching up with the most developed Western European countries and catching up with them in terms of living standards is a task for the present and next generation of Poles. Building a knowledge-based economy provides a chance to perform this task in the next 20–40 years. "Wise Poland" contains a huge amount of information in various fields that we should – as a society – use in the public debate on the directions of development and the future of the Polish state.
Kazimierz Sobczyk, On the meanders of life and stochasticity – optimisticly. An autobiographical story
(in Polish: O meandrach życia i stochastyce – optymistycznie. Opowieść autobiograficzna)
|
The book shows the life path of Professor Kazimierz Sobczyk – a mathematician specializing in stochastics: how from a small village in the Kielce Province (now: Świętokrzyskie) one could reach the position of a professor of the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences and leading American universities: Notre Dame University, Illinois State University in Urbana – Champaign. For young people planning their path, the so-called scientific career book by prof. Sobczyk can be a valuable inspiration, and perhaps also a recipe for choosing the right path, although a sober/clear-headed assessment of one's own abilities and possibilities is one of the necessary conditions, which can also be read between the lines of this biography.
Engineering Mechanics (under the auspices of the Mechanics Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences)
(Mechanika Techniczna)
Biomechanics, edited by Romuald Będziński
|
"Biomechanika" is the next - number XII - volume of the series Mechanika Techniczna published under the auspices of the Committee of Mechanics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
Biomechanics includes elements of biology and physics, plays an important role both in describing the world around us and in the development of treatment methods. Describing and identifying biological structures, it uses tools known from physics, mathematics and computer science, thanks to which the foundations for the development of many fields, including technology, are created. Within biomechanics, new concepts are emerging, relating not only to the treatment process, but also to the development of innovative structures and the creation of new, more complex descriptions of mechanical processes.
In this book, compiled by 13 authors (representing research centers throughout Poland) with various specialties - engineers, doctors and physicists - only some fragments of the basics of biomechanics have been collected, enabling the identification and description of biological structures and the mechanisms of their operation. Experiences of numerous foreign and domestic centers as well as own, including the application of mechanics, especially in surgery, including orthopedic and traumatological surgery, are presented. In addition to the basics of engineering biomechanics, the book covers the application of numerical and experimental methods, micromechanics of biological fluids, modeling and analysis of thermal phenomena as well as biomechanical systems (including motion simulation). It also covers the issues of optimization, constitutive equations and functional adaptation of bone, as well as the problems of biomechanics in conservative dentistry and a description of the use of robots and manipulators in medicine.

Dominik Kukla, Non-destructive methods in assessment of damage development in structural materials operated under service loads
(in Polish: Metody nieniszczące w ocenie rozwoju uszkodzenia materiałów konstrukcyjnych w warunkach obciążeń eksploatacyjnych)
|
The work concerns the application of eddy current and other non-destructive methods for identification of local changes in the structure of material due to the development of damage under fatigue conditions. For selected, metallic structural engineering materials (steels, nickel and aluminum alloys) subjected to cyclic alternating loads, the quantitative characteristics of damage development were presented and described on the basis of the evolution of deformation components in subsequent load cycles. Along with the fatigue tests, a number of nondestructive diagnostic methods were used to assess the possibility of locating the fatigue failure initiation process in various materials. The proposed research procedures of the eddy current method, supported by optical techniques, allowed not only for early-stage identification of fatigue damage development areas but also to monitor the degradation process of specimens, up to their failure.

Wojciech Nasalski, Optical Beams at Dielectric Interfaces - fundamentals
|
The book presents a detailed and comprehensive theoretical treatment of interactions of narrow optical beams with abrupt planar discontinuities of dielectric media. While the focus is on the problem of beams at a single linear dielectric interface, examples of nonlinear interfaces and stratified media are also discussed. The method of analysis relies mainly on the notion of first-order and second-order effects of beam nonspecular reflection and transmission, beam reflection, transmission and scattering matrices and cross-polarization coupling of beam field components. The content of this book follows closely author’s recent publications in this field. The contribution of other authors to this topic is commented as well in each successive section of this book.
