Dr Mateusz Kopeć from Department of Experimental Mechanics received habilitation degree in mechanical engineering. As the part of his scientific achievements, a single-thematic series of eight publications was submitted. They were published in the years 2021-2023, under the title: „Methodology for damage development monitoring in engineering materials subjected to service loads”

The main aim of his research and the subject of scientific achievement was the effective monitoring of the fatigue damage development in engineering materials, especially power engineering steels, supported by optical measurements and analytical calculation methods.

In polish power plants industry sector, most of the working components made from power engineering steels suffer from high temperature wear and tear exploitation. Power engineering steels are subjected to excessive working under high temperature conditions and thus their performance should be monitored in order to avoid a serious consequences.

Considering a number of advantages leading from optical measuring systems application, the following techniques have been proposed to effectively monitor fatigue damage development in engineering materials, especially power engineering steels:

  • the two mentioned optical measurement methods - Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry and Digital Image Correlation;
  • An analytical method to determine the damage degree of the structural material caused by operational loads, using measurable damage parameters.

The suitability of optical methods in damage monitoring was initially evaluated for X10CrMoVNb9-1 power engineering steel and then applied to 10CrMo9-10 and 14MoV6-3 steels. Simultaneously, the methodology of measurable damage parameters was used, and subsequently correlated with optical measurement methods. The combination of these methods was consequently applied to assess the effect of long-term high-temperature operation (80,000h and 280,000h) on the mechanical properties (especially high and low cycle fatigue) and the microstructure of X10CrMoVNb9-1 and 10CrMo9-1 steels. The effectiveness of optical measurement methods was also investigated in terms of modern engineering materials, i.e. nickel superalloys and fiber composites.
